Okayama Kyokuto Hospital installed the pioneering device "The Cyberknife". - the third one in Japan
The cyberknife is Stereotactic Radiosurgery robot that allows for precise application of highly focused beams of radiation for destroying solid cancers. Conventional stereotactic radiosurgery is done with a variety of high energy radiation; linear accelerators, cobalt isotopes, and heavy particle accelerators. Each of these approaches has one or more disadvantages. In 1992, a unique device, the Cyberknife is invented by Dr. John. Adlar at Stanford University.
From2000, the Cyberknife has been installed and being used to treat patients. Unlike other stereotactic radiosurgery devices, the Cyberknife (frameless stereotactic radiosurgery) confirms precisely the location of the lesion from the radiation beam throughout the procedure. There is another radiosurgery system, called Gamma Knife, for treating brain tumors. With Gamma Knife, metal helmet should be positioned to secure patient's head so it can't avoid hurting his/her skull. The Cyberknife does not need flame placement though. It is a safe, non-invasive, technologically advanced device and many conditions can be treated with little or no pain.
It's possible to discover a cancer which is difficult to find, and has wider field to diagnosis.
PET・RI center started in April 2004.
Our hospital has PET-CTs (it's a combined device of PET and CT), and SPECT-CT.
PET-CT is mainly used to find cancer, SPECT-CT is to examine cerebral blood flow, cardiac disease, autonomic disturbance, and bone disease, etc.
FDG-PET examination uses FDG that is glucose combined with a slight amount of radioactive substance. Cancer massively uses glucose as energy and FDG-PET examination uses this nature, and it enable to know where the cancer is.
FDG-PET examination is not effective when a cancer is very small, or when the density of cancer cell is low.
Considering some tissues or organs are vulnerable (ex, brain, urinary tract、stomach, etc.). FDG-PET examination has the advantage of small damage to the body. It can examine wide range of the body and it is possible to examine a cancer that is difficult to find by CT.
PET-CT makes it possible to diagnose more accurately by using both CT image and FDG-PET image, which proved in many clinical cases.
MEDICAL INTERVIEW
Before PET-CT examination, you have to answer some questions about your medical history, medical examinations you have taken before, and your present condition. We explain about the examination and clear up your question.
PET-CT EXAMINATION
Before the examination, patient undergoes a four-hour fasting and one-hour rest. It takes about 30 minutes for the examination. Doctor diagnoses by combining CT image with FDG-PET image.
RI EXAMINATION
It’s an imaging examination using an isotope. Patient examined by SPECT-CT after a few hours or a few days of injecting RI. Advantages of RI examination is; few damage to the body, it can examine a wide range of the body. We use the latest RI to examine metabolic information and anatomic information.
MRI-guided focused ultrasound (FUS) therapy is a treatment method that improves symptoms(essential
tremor) by focused ultrasound-produced heating on the damaged tissues, which is guided by MRI.
Since the treatment can be performed without incising the head, the inpatient period is shorter and the
pain burden on patients is less than that of conventional intervention.
Essential tremor of unknown cause(usually of hands and head)
that develops in older people, often mistaken for Parkinsonism.
In April 2021, Okayama Kyokuto Hospital introduced FUS for the first time in the Chugoku region, and We
provide treatment in collaboration with Okayama University Hospital (Department of Neurosurgery and
Neurology) and Kurashiki Heisei Hospital.
